The Minoan Brotherhood
Founded in the 1970s, the Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory tradition of Witchcraft specifically for men who love men. Its ritual foundations are rooted particularly in Gardnerian Witchcraft and the broader tradition of British Traditional Witchcraft, while its mythology and spiritual imagery draw profound inspiration from the ancient Aegean world and Minoan Crete.

Founder of the Minoan Brotherhood
The Minoan Brotherhood took shape in New York City during the 1970s through the work of Edmund M. “Eddie” Buczynski, an initiate and Elder of several traditions of Witchcraft whose spiritual life was deeply shaped by mythology, history, and the ancient world.
At a time when much of Traditional Witchcraft centered its ritual symbolism around heterosexual polarity, Eddie recognized the need for a tradition in which men who loved men could encounter the Craft through a spiritual framework that reflected their own lives and relationships. Drawing upon his experience within initiatory Witchcraft together with his study of ancient civilizations, he began developing what would become the Minoan Brotherhood.
What emerged was not simply an adaptation of an existing tradition, but a distinct initiatory Mystery Tradition with its own mythology, ritual life, and spiritual current. Inspired especially by Crete and the wider Aegean world, the Brotherhood developed a sacred framework in which the Mysteries of the Gods and the love between men could stand at the heart of the Craft.
From its beginnings in New York, the Brotherhood grew through initiation and lineage. Successive generations of Brothers carried the Tradition forward, establishing autonomous Groves while preserving its central Mysteries and continuing the work of study, practice, and development begun by Eddie and the earliest Brothers.
A Living Tradition of Witchcraft
The Minoan Brotherhood is a living tradition of Ritual Witchcraft, practiced through ritual, magick, study, and direct experience. Rather than existing simply as a body of teachings, the Tradition is something its Brothers actively participate in - building relationships with the Gods, exploring its Mysteries, and deepening their own practice within a shared initiatory framework.
The ritual year moves through eight seasonal Festivals and the 13 Moons, creating a continuing rhythm of celebration, devotion, and magick. Alongside ritual practice, Brothers may explore subjects such as divination, astrology, herbalism, Kabbalah, folk practices, and other magical arts, bringing study and experience together as part of an evolving spiritual path.
The Gods & the Mysteries
At the heart of the Minoan Brotherhood are the Great Mother and Her Divine Son, through whom the sacred mythology and Mysteries of the Tradition unfold. Within this mythic framework, the love between men holds a place of spiritual significance, woven into the Brotherhood's understanding of divinity, relationship, and sacred experience.
Some aspects of our mythology can be shared openly, while its deeper Mysteries belong to initiation. They are not simply teachings to be read or explained, but are encountered through ritual and lived within the Tradition.
Groves, Initiation & Lineage
The Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory Tradition structured through three degrees. Its local covens, known as Groves, are autonomous communities led by Third Degree initiates called Minoi, each carrying the Tradition within the framework established by the Brotherhood.
Initiation is more than membership. Through ritual, teaching, and lived experience, each Brother enters into the Mysteries of the Tradition and becomes part of an initiatory lineage extending back to Eddie Buczynski. This shared lineage connects Brothers and Groves across generations, preserving the continuity of the Tradition while allowing each Grove to develop its own character and community.
